CELEBRATING EARTH DAY
Happy Earth Day!
What a joy to celebrate this special day, despite the mixed feelings we may have because of all that is going on in the world right now. Although there may be some restrictions depending on where you are based, It’s still important to find a way to celebrate this day. How to do that? here are some of our favorite ways to celebrate Earth Day 2021:
Joining virtual events. On the EARTHDAY.ORG platform there is a global climate summit taking place. There you can find an interactive map of activities taking place world-wide.
The little ones (and not only them), can participate in the Climate Action Crash Course Webinar organized by the teen eco-hero Sarah Goody.
Making financial donations to your preferred charitable organization. If you don’t know any, you can find some suggestions here.
Organizing or participating in cleanup activities in your city.
Go on a hike with your family, or participate in an organized activity in your area.
Slow down and take your time to reconnect with nature. You can do it at home, in your garden, or going to a place you enjoy and inspires peacefulness.
And not to forget, one of our favorite activities to celebrate this day: planting a tree.
Why do I think that planting trees is one of the best ways to celebrate this day?
Because trees absorb CO₂, bad smells, and polluting agents from the atmosphere, and they have an important contribution to the production of oxygen.
They are a source of food and shelter for humans, animals and other living beings. The trees help us cool down during the summer, dampen the street noise and absorb the dust and wind.
And as our planet is clearly asking for us to take action, this year, on behalf of My Kitchen and Me we decided to act in the best way we could think of. That is by planting 50 trees to celebrate Earth Day. These 50 trees will be planted in the Dominican Republic, where our founder, Ana Bonifacio is from; and marks the start of our “buy one, plant one” campaign around the world.
Today we are breaking records in terms of carbon dioxide emissions, as we could learn at the beginning of this month from the Mauna Loa Observatory in Hawaii. You can read more about this critical record in this article from the Washington Post.
According to Kate Marvel, a climate scientist at NASA, “We’re completely certain that the increase in CO2 is warming the planet,” and she’s further stating that “I’m even more certain CO2 causes global heating than I am that smoking causes cancer”.
With all these in mind, one can realize the importance that changing habits and incorporating small actions of great impact can have in our day to day.
In order to recognize all our efforts and celebrate today, we would like to wrap this up with a small challenge for each and every one of you:
Reflect on the small or bigger changes that we could incorporate in our daily routine and change those that could affect negatively our environment.
Something as simple as removing those toxic products that we unsuspectingly started using, is already a big improvement. There are so many alternatives these days, that you can easily find products that are environmental friendly and also powerful enough to efficiently clean our homes. If not knowing where to start, you can get some inspiration from our article here.
Choosing products and services that are environmentally friendly and businesses that want to do better means that we can trust them.
Let us know what you think in the comments, we’d love to know if you’re ready to make some changes!
